Editorial: Why Women Should Have Their Own Porn
We here at For The Girls are very pleased with what we’ve achieved over the past four years or so. In the beginning we created the sort of adult site that we ourselves would want to visit and hoped it would appeal to other women. Our instincts were proved right as thousands of female porn lovers have joined and enjoyed our site over the years.
Of course, every now and again there is a suggestion in the media or blogosphere that porn for women is a bit of a silly concept. For a start there’s some people who just don’t believe that women actually like adult material. “Women aren’t visual,” they’ll say or “Women only like romance novels.” Clearly, given the success of our site (and the fact that Nielsen Netratings found that one third of all visitors to porn sites were women), these people are wrong.
Then there are others who assume that “porn for women” just means flowery, overtly romantic softcore material and dismiss it as sexist fluff. We at FTG know that’s not true. Plenty of women dig hardcore porn and kinky stuff, and so do we! Women’s porn can be anything, so long as it’s made FOR women.
And then there are those who don’t understand why women wouldn’t like the porn that’s already out there, which to me is just strange. The vast majority of porn is made for a male audience and reflects what men want to see. Think about your average porn scene: the focus is on the woman (who usually looks like a Barbie doll), the guy is often unattractive, there’s often no reason for people to have sex and if they do it usually takes the shape of a male fantasy with little resemblance to real life. The scene usually ends with a male orgasm - the women are lucky if they come at all.
There are plenty of straight women for whom this kind of porn is not appealing. Even if we’re turned on by the visuals, our brains are probably recoiling at the cliched stupidity of it all.
At For The Girls, we’ve always been about offering erotic material from a woman’s perspective, with a focus on female pleasure. Fact is, that’s something that the majority of porn doesn’t offer, and it’s something that many women want to see. Straight women need to have their own porn to help them explore their fantasies as well as reflecting their experience of sex.
